Jack Thorne’s broomstick is about to enter hyperspace. Thorne, a veteran scribe most famous for working with J.K. Rowling on the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, has been tapped to write the second draft of the untitled Star Wars Episode IX, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Director Colin Trevorrow co-wrote the first draft of Episode IX, which follows on from Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi (Episode VIII in the Skywalker Saga.) We’ve reached out to Lucasfilm to confirm the news. While there’s no official word, Johnson offered a corroborating tweet when he corrected just one minor detail of the THR story. Audiences are pushing back.8/1/2017 On Monday, five public health researchers asked Netflix to do something seemingly impossible: remove a graphic suicide scene from its popular show 13 Reasons Why. The request, which Netflix shows no signs of heeding, raises thorny questions about artistic license in Hollywood. While creatives might be accustomed to working out of the public’s view to faithfully execute their vision, audiences are increasingly eager to challenge storytelling choices they find troubling or irresponsible. In many ways, that sums up what happened with 13 Reasons Why. Viewers, parents, and mental health experts turned to social media and the press to explain why they found the show’s vivid depiction of suicide harmful and disturbing. Now those advocates can point to new research to bolster their argument. Food and drink trends, like most trends, like to take things way too far. Rosé is one of the worst offenders since bacon. Though introducing crushed grape skins to wine to give it its rosy hue is nothing new, the trend has exploded in the past few years, probably because millennials ruin everything. There are 40-ounce rosé bottles, there’s rosé deodorant, there’s chocolate, and rosé gummies. Now there’s rosé gin. Winemaker Wölffer Estate Vineyard first announced its “pink” gin last August, but it seems as if it went largely unnoticed until recently. The winemaker is known for rosé wine, so why not keep up with the trend and branch out? Last year, a player was suspended for using weed to cope with Crohn’s disease all because marijuana falls under the league’s controlled substance policy, with no exceptions for medical use. But that could be changing soon. The Washington Post reported late Monday that the NFL has offered to work with the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) to study the effects of marijuana use for pain management. The union has been working on its own marijuana study. The Sundance smash centers on the life-changing love affair between two Americans in Italy: one a teenager still figuring himself out, the other a more self-assured young man. Armie Hammer plays the young man, in what could be the career breakout that The Social Network was supposed to be but never quite was. But the real revelation here is Timothée Chalamet, whom I’d previously just known as Finn from Season 1 of Homeland. But Confederate isn’t the only alt-history project in the works that uses the Civil War as a starting point. Amazon reportedly has a similar concept deep in development, and the rival studio’s head start may be at least partly why HBO went with its announcement when it did. On Tuesday, NPR broke the news that longtime contributor Rod Wheeler is suing the network over allegations that Fox News misattributed quotes to him to further a made-up story involving the murder of a Democratic National Committee employee, and that the network did so at President Donald Trump’s behest. The claim is, shall we say, explosive. We’ve extracted the six most shocking quotes from the lawsuit, below.
